Friday Free For All is thrilled to welcome back Arachnophilia to kick off Family Weekend 2008. Also known as Arachno, this bluegrass group is composed of four
University of Richmond Facilities staff (Mike Bowles, mandolin and lead
vocals; John Hoogakker, bass and harmony vocals; Russell Newcomb,
banjo; and Calvin Whitaker, guitar and harmony vocals). Bowles is chief
mechanic/supervisor in the University's Heating and Cooling Shop;
Hoogakker is associate vice president for Facilities; and Newcomb and
Whitaker both work in the Carpentry Shop. Band members have played in different groups over the years. From
time to time, they come together and jam-out during their lunch hour at
the Physical Plant. A couple of years ago, the members decided to play
a limited number of dates together and restricted their performances to
University events. Their previous Friday Free For All concerts have drawn big crowds, and the Modlin Center for the Arts and the University of Richmond Office of Annual Giving are thrilled to bring them back during Family Weekend.
The Friday Free For All series features a wide variety of music, theatre and dance, and is suitable for audiences of any age. Guests are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to enjoy during lunchtime performances, except for performances in the Heilman Dining Center where meals must be purchased.
All Friday Free For All events are FREE and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
