The three musicians first played together in 1989 but didn't come together as an established act until 2000. Perhaps to make up for lost time, they proceeded to record their first album, a self-titled effort released on Fresh Sound, after playing only three gigs together. In 2002 after playing a show at the Village Vanguard, the band was signed to Columbia Records. Pianist Ethan Iverson spoke with us about the band and their music during this recent phone interview.
Until April of 1999, the dynamic family band known as Cherryholmes did not exist, and half of its youthful members hadn't even picked up
an instrument. In five short years, this high-energy Nashville-based
band was named 2005 IBMA's Entertainers of the Year. Cherryholmes has many qualities that make them unique, but the
basis of their success lies in plain, old-fashioned hard work combined
with shining star talent that only appears to glow more brightly with
each performance. They embody the American Bluegrass dream. Learn more during this phone interview with band leader (and father) Jere Cherryholmes prior to the band's Richmond appearance on February 11.
Known for his technical precision and expressive mastery, Paquito D'Rivera is one of the most renowned saxophonists in Latin jazz. The Cuban-born prodigy burst onto the international scene in the 1970s as a member of the legendary group Irakere, known for its pioneering mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional Cuban music. A man of diverse influences, he's led big bands, calypso, salsa and chamber ensembles. He'll demonstrate some of his incredible versatility when he performs with the Brazilian Assad Brothers at Camp Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 8. During this interview, held after a week-long run at New York's Blue Note, D'Rivera had plenty to say about the gap he sees between classical and jazz performers, something anathema to his musical education. [24 min.]Interviewer Lara Pellegrinelli is a Visiting Assistant Professor of
Music at the University of Richmond and a freelance music journalist.

Andy McGraw is an ethnomusicologist, performer, percussionist, improviser and composer specializing in contemporary music, intercultural composition and traditional and avant-garde musics of Southeast Asia. At Richmond, McGraw directs the University Gamelan Ensemble. I Gusti Putu Sudarta, from Bedulu, egularly performs traditional Balinese music, (mask) dance and wayang kulit in ceremonial contexts. Sudarta is currently an artist-in-residence at the University of Richmond. Thanks in part to the recent increase in interest in Balinese music, the Modlin Center will welcome Gamelan Cudamani on October 25, 2007.
